ABOUT US

We are Julia and Dave Tanner and together we run Julia Tanner Art.

julia and dave tanner

We were both born and raised in Essex where we met in the year 2000. We now live on the Isle of Wight after falling in love with the spectacular scenery during many holidays here. My paintings are inspired not only by The Island, but also from our many travels and holidays around the British Isles.

Our Mission is to create beautiful and unique art which lifts your spirits  and brings a smile to your face. We use only the finest quality paint, papers and inks so our products will last a lifetime and beyond. However, because we control all the processes ourselves our prices remain affordable. We have built fantastic relationships with our suppliers, all of whom are based in the UK. At the end of the day, however, the most important part of our business is you because without ‘you’ there would be no ‘us’. Your satisfaction is our top priority and we offer a 100% ‘Happiness Guarantee’ which is backed up by our hundreds of written testimonials including over 90 Google reviews, all of which are five star. If you are not completely delighted with everything that you purchase from us we will do whatever is necessary to make sure that you are.

Whatever the reason.

How we began, by Julia.

My love of art was sparked by two things: coming face to face with Henri Rousseau’s Tiger (in a Tropical Storm – Surprised) in The National Gallery – I was only 8, we made eye contact – and winning a prize in a schools painting competition when I was 10.

I don’t ever remember a time when I wasn’t drawing or painting but when I left school I advised by my Father to get a ‘proper job’  so I started at NatWest Bank. In the meantime, however, I continued with my art and spent many years developing my skills both in the classroom and in experimental research, also gaining qualifications in interior design along the way.

It was the loss of my parents in 2005 and 2009 however, that triggered my total immersion in my painting as it became the most wonderful therapy to get through those dark times.

I started to exhibit in village halls and college exhibitions in 2011, selling my first painting at the RHS Hyde Hall Craft and Design Show in 2012.

With the support of Dave the shows gradually grew until I made the momentous decision to give up part-time work in 2014 and focus all my efforts on our own Business.

Dave had been working as a Landscape Gardener and Semi-Professional Photographer and was creating our prints at that time and we both realised that our passions could also become our full-time Business. My background working for financial institutions has given me the perfect skills needed to be able to run a successful business (thanks Dad!). Daves experience coordinating and curating exhibitions for photography groups has also played a large part in our success.

More about Julia

I am a Professional Associate of The SAA – www.saa.co.uk – and have written two articles for their magazine ‘Paint’, also being a brand ambassador for Pebeo paint on their behalf. Three of my paintings were shortlisted for a Pebeo Mixed Media competition resulting in an exhibition at The A & D Gallery in Marylebone. I was delighted to have artworks displayed and sold in The Oxo Tower Wharf Gallery as part of ’The Letter in Mind’ exhibition for The National Brain Charity, a cause close to my heart.

My style has developed to exploit the properties of the paint resulting in a slightly surreal and abstract way of painting. My sports paintings evolved from a childhood love of horses and from watching ‘Le Tour de France’ on television whilst expecting my Daughter.

More about Dave

Dave spent several years running a Landscape Gardening Business which enabled him to combine his love of the outdoors with a design element. His earlier love of Photography was rekindled by the desire to capture what he was creating so he moved on from 35mm to the new world of digital. He spent several years with photography groups, galleries and printers curating exhibitions whilst also working in Partnership with me to create artwork displays at our shows . A selection of Daves Photographs are also available to purchase from the Photography section of this website.

Together we exhibit our work at shows where we love to meet customers both old and new.

The Entertainment Department……….

Living on The Isle of Wight means that all our squirrels are the very cute reds. We are so lucky to have them visiting our garden (the £40 nut order probably helps!) where they provide us with endless entertainment. If you Subscribe to our newsletter you’ll be able to read about what they have been up to.

You can find a selection of our work at Nervous Wreck Designs who are at 13 Bath Street, Cowes, PO31 7QN. There’s a link to their Facebook page HERE

We have recently collaborated with Otway & Orford in an exciting venture featuring ‘Corner Kick’ printed onto luxury Mulberry Silk pocket squares.
